About Anatomy

The Department of Anatomy is one of the core basic science departments that provides the fundamental framework essential for the understanding and advancement of medical sciences. It plays a pivotal role in laying a strong conceptual and practical foundation for students across health-science disciplines.
The department is actively engaged in comprehensive teaching–learning activities for undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical programs, including MBBS, MD (Anatomy), B.Sc. Nursing, and B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT). In addition to academic instruction, the department offers a robust platform for research activities encompassing doctoral (PhD) programs, institutionally supported research, and projects funded by national agencies. Undergraduate students are also encouraged to engage in research through participation in Indian Council of Medical Research–Short Term Studentship (ICMR-STS) projects, fostering early exposure to scientific inquiry.
The department is well equipped to undertake integrated academic and research initiatives in collaboration with clinical departments, facilitating hands-on training, postgraduate skill development, and competency-based learning using cadavers as a primary educational resource. Expanding beyond traditional boundaries, the department actively collaborates with various internal and external institutions and disciplines, including Biotechnology, AYUSH, other Institutes of National Importance (INIs), Nursing, Dental, and Veterinary colleges, thereby contributing to interdisciplinary and translational research endeavors.
At present, the department is conducting four externally funded research projects supported by central government funding agencies such as the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in addition to several intramural and self-funded research initiatives. Three doctoral research projects are currently in progress, with faculty members of the department enrolled as research scholars.
The department also plays a proactive role in social outreach by promoting and organizing awareness programs to encourage whole-body donation, which serves as an indispensable resource for routine academic teaching (UG/PG dissection), integrated training, and research activities. Additionally, the department provides round-the-clock commercial embalming and packing services to facilitate the transportation of deceased bodies to outstation destinations, upon request.
With a high degree of self-sufficiency, the department has developed and maintains a wide range of educational resources, including histology slides, museum specimens, articulated skeletons, anatomical models, and preserved dissected specimens. The department regularly hosts educational visits by school students and students from allied health-science institutions, contributing to community engagement and academic outreach.
Faculty members of the department actively contribute to institutional governance and academic administration through their participation in various statutory and non-statutory committees. They also provide expert services in processes related to student admissions, faculty recruitment, and academic scrutiny, thereby supporting the overall academic and administrative mission of the institution.
