About Hospital Administration

The Department of Hospital Administration at AIIMS Nagpur was established in July 2023 The department functions as a central coordinating unit that integrates administrative and clinical domains to ensure efficient, safe, and patient-centric healthcare services, in alignment with national healthcare priorities and institutional goals.

The department plays a pivotal role in the planning, coordination, and monitoring of hospital operations, including outpatient services, inpatient care, emergency and trauma services, diagnostics, and support services. Through the implementation of standardized processes, evidence-based management practices, and continuous monitoring of performance indicators, the department contributes to optimal resource utilization, improved service efficiency, regulatory compliance, and enhanced patient experience.

The department also plays a key role in institutional initiatives related to NABH accreditation and Kayakalp, supporting quality assurance, patient safety, infection prevention, cleanliness, and continuous improvement across hospital services.

Academics and capacity building form a core mandate of the department. The department runs the MD Hospital Administration postgraduate academic programme, aimed at developing competent healthcare administrators with strong grounding in hospital operations, clinical governance, quality management, health policy, and leadership.

In addition, the department jointly conducts the Advanced Healthcare Management Programme in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, fostering interdisciplinary learning by integrating healthcare delivery perspectives with management sciences. This collaboration supports leadership development, applied learning, and health systems strengthening through structured academic modules, workshops, and project-based learning.

The department is supported by a well-established departmental library, equipped with standard textbooks, reference materials, and national and international journals related to hospital administration, healthcare management, quality improvement, patient safety, and health systems research. Regular academic activities such as postgraduate teaching sessions, seminars, journal clubs, workshops, induction programmes, and training sessions for residents, nursing officers, and allied health professionals are conducted to promote continuous learning and professional development.

Faculty members of the Department of Hospital Administration are also entrusted with significant administrative responsibilities and actively support hospital governance through their roles in the Medical Superintendent’s Office. They contribute to hospital administration, operational oversight, policy formulation, committee coordination, regulatory compliance, and liaison with statutory and regulatory bodies. This close integration of academic functions with real-time administrative leadership ensures a strong linkage between theory and practice and contributes to efficient and effective hospital functioning.

Research and innovation are integral components of the department’s activities. Faculty members and residents actively engage in health systems research, hospital performance evaluation, patient safety and quality improvement studies, and implementation research aligned with national healthcare priorities. Through its integrated approach encompassing academics, administration, quality, and research, the Department of Hospital Administration at AIIMS Nagpur contributes significantly to institutional excellence and the delivery of accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare.
