About general medicine

Our Vision:

To be Leaders in population based patient care, mentor the gen-next medicos by innovative and effective educational strategies and develop highest standard of ethical and quality research.

Our Mission:

To develop a model patient care system which is accessible, affordable, acceptable and serves the needs of the community at large. To lay a rock-solid foundation for medical students in terms of training, evidence based learning and clinical skills development. To set up and promote excellent clinical research department to implement novel treatments and solutions in patient care.

The Department of Medicine at AIIMS Nagpur is a cornerstone of the institute’s clinical, academic, and research activities, playing a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive internal medicine services to the population of Central India. During the academic year 2024-2025, the department continued to demonstrate sustained growth in patient care, education, and research, despite a rapidly increasing clinical workload and expanding institutional responsibilities. The department is led by an experienced faculty team comprising 12 full-time faculty members across three functional units, supported by senior residents and junior residents. Nine faculty members are recognized postgraduate guides, reflecting the department’s strong academic credentials and commitment to mentorship. The department is actively involved in undergraduate teaching, postgraduate MD Medicine training, internship programs, and rotational teaching for learners from other clinical specialties, ensuring a robust continuum of medical education.

Clinically, the Department of Medicine provides round-the-clock comprehensive care through outpatient, inpatient, daycare, emergency, and critical care services. The outpatient department functions daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and manages an average footfall exceeding 350 patients per day, with a cumulative OPD attendance of more than 3.5 lakh patients over recent years, reflecting an exponential rise in service utilization. Specialty clinics for HIV, rheumatology, and sickle cell disease are integral components of OPD services, with sickle cell patients receiving free treatment and investigations, along with prenatal diagnostic support in collaboration with Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Inpatient services include fully functional male and female medicine wards with a combined strength of over 100 beds and consistently100% occupancy. A major highlight is the 22-bedded state-of-the-art Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), operational since June 2022, which caters not only to general medicine patients but also supports cardiology, nephrology, pulmonology, and hematology services. The department has further strengthened critical care delivery through the addition of high-dependency units in both male and female wards. Telemedicine services through the e-Sanjeevani platform and dedicated teleconsultation for sickle cell disease extend care beyond hospital walls, enhancing accessibility.

Research is a key focus area, with the department actively engaged in intramural and extramural projects, including multiple ICMR-funded studies, clinical trials, and collaborative multicentric research. Faculty and trainees have contributed extensively to national and international publications, conference presentations, and book chapters, underscoring the department’s growing research footprint. Inter-institutional collaborations with other AIIMS, academic institutes, and national research organizations further strengthen translational and population-based research initiatives.

Looking ahead, the Department of Medicine envisions expansion of specialty clinics, enhancement of critical care infrastructure, initiation of PDCC and DM programs in intensive care, and scaling up of research capacity. With its integrated approach to patient care, education, and research, the department continues to align itself with the broader mission of AIIMS Nagpur to deliver excellence in healthcare and medical science.
